The Lymph Connection, Edgewood, KY
This support group based at St. Elizabeth Medical Center-South has become
much more educated since its recent meetings.
The highlight was breast surgeon Dr. J. Michael Guenther's talk, ''What
Every Breast Cancer Survivor Needs to Know about Lymphedema,'' when over 60
therapists and patients asked questions, viewed his slide presentation of a
sentinel node dissection, and heard him speak on other lymphedema-related
topics: causes, stages, physiology of the lymphatic system, prevention,
precautions and treatment.
Dr. Guenther has written an exciting article, ''Axillary Dissection is
Not Required for All Patients With Breast Cancer and Positive Sentinel
Nodes.'' He found that breast cancer patients who had metastasis in the
sentinel node but chose not to have full axillary lymph node dissection had a
low incidence of regional breast cancer recurrence. Go to Archsurg.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/138/1/52
for more information.
Other recent meeting topics included: Reflexology; Report from the 2002 NLN
Patient Summit: The Quest for Understanding; How to be an Advocate for
Lymphedema; Lymphedema Exercise and Long-term Maintenance; and viewing of the
Lymphatic Research Foundation's (LRF) award-winning videotape, Mobilizing the
Efforts for Hope, Research and Cure.
